The Hammonasset Chapter of Trout Unlimited held another very successful Youth Education Day at Chatfield Hollow in Killingworth, CT on Saturday October 2nd. The day was a wonderful learning experience for all involved. With a 100% turn out, thirty-six children ages seven to fifteen and their parents spent the morning rotating through three different learning stations.
The first hour was a class on local ecosystems and entomology. This class was taught buy local biologists and entomologists and involved the students collecting aquatic life in nets for examination and discussion. What kids don't like getting wet, muddy and collecting bugs.
The next hour was fly casing where each student had a fly rod and was instructed in the basics of casting. Several fun training aids were used as well as some casting games that kept the kids involved and focused on fly casting.
After that, they went to fly tying for the last hour where each kid had a vise and tools and were instructed on how to ties several basic flies. The CT DEP also made an appearance and thrilled the kids with hundreds of splish splashing' rainbow trout.
The kids all had an opportunity to touch, handle and release there beautiful fish into the lower pond and also learned why we stock our local rivers and ponds. At noon the grills were ready with the food for the hungry crowd of 75+ students, parents and volunteers. Prizes were awarded along with a youth raffle and then at last we proceeded to fish for the remainder of the day.
This was certainly wonderful experience for the kids, parents as well as the volunteers. Hats off to all the helpers and sponsors that stepped forward to make the day a big success. You know who you are. Thanks. And also a special thanks goes out to the major sponsors of L.L. Bean Co., Shakespeare Fishing Tackle Co., Dr Slick Co., Plano Molding Co., Roberts Foods, James Carta, The CT Department of Environmental Protection and Trout Unlimited for their donation of fly-fishing equipment and food that made the day a huge success.
